Prepositions

It is hard to define a preposition. A preposition is a headword in a prepositional phrase, which often includes an object–a noun phrase:

  • Somewhere over [the rainbow].
  • Take me to [the river].
  • This is between [those guys].

Prepositions are often interchangeable:

  • I was bored by her speech. | I was bored with her speech.
